Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, as Indigenous people were first on this land now called the U.S. We remember that numerous Indigenous people were displaced, tortured, and murdered in the name of spreading poisonous European colonialism. Many cultures today still thrive in spite of continued pressures to assimilate, attacks on their cultures, and blatant violations of their rights. Botham Jean was murdered in his own apartment on September 6, 2018 by Dallas police officer Amber Guyger while in his home. Guyger claimed to have thought she was in her own apartment one floor below, and that Jean was an intruder. Over a year later, Guyger was convicted of murder. RIP to Botham Jean, justice was served.
