Today, former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering 26 year old Botham Jean in his own apartment. Jean was murdered on September 6, 2018 when Guyger claims to have accidentally entered his apartment and shot him when she mistook Jean for an intruder in her own apartment.

Botham Jean, 26, worked at an accounting firm called PricewaterhouseCoopers

Activists and citizens following the case cited racial bias as a possible factor as Jean is of St. Lucian descent and Guyger is white. Further digging into Guyger’s previous text messages revealed she often made racist comments at the expense of people of African descent.

Following the proceedings, Judge Tammy Kemp and members of Jean’s family hugged Guyger and provided well wishes.
